Good evening! Seniors and parents: I wanted to let you know that this is your senior scholarship presentation. This is Mrs. Couch. I am here to help you get as much free money for your next steps after high school as you are eligible for. That is part of my role here as the school counselor. I will have my contact information down below at the end of this presentation. If, parents - you are not aware of how to get a hold of me. For today, we are going to be talking about your FAFSA check in. There some additional information that has just been published regarding that - some changes in due dates. We will talk about the work ethic distinction honor, and why that is important and, where to get the information for that, and most importantly - we will go over your scholarship packets. The FAFSA - my first question is, "Are you done yet?" I hope the answer is, "yes". Remember - FAFSA is your free federal student aid. The federal deadline is still February the first. I know that the Tennessee Promise sent out a large text chat. I know that they put it on Twitter. I'm sure you may have received some emails about it - that you have until March the first to complete the FAFSA. That is only for the Tennessee Promise portion of that. In order to be eligible for your free federal money, it still needs to be done by February the first, as of this recording. If I get new information, students - I will of course share it with you and parents, I will try to update it on the school's website. As of right now, the federal date is still February the first. Students and parents - you use your tax information from 2019 to file your FAFSA. Students you have a portion to do and parents, you have a portion to do. If you have any questions or need additional help, you are welcome to call me here in the office, or... let me hop over to TEAMS and show you where you might be able to answer your own questions. On our TEAMS channel, students - you'll go to your TEAMS file. You will find the one that has my name on it, "Couch, K." You are going to go to the 2021 channel and the file section. Under financial aid info - in that folder, I have pinned to the top your FAFSA step-by-step guide. This walks you through from start to finish, what you need to do, to complete your FAFSA. So, I tried to make everything easy at your fingertips in the event that we were out for any reason - whether it's quarantine, snow, etc. I don't want any barriers in your way to getting free money. The students already know this but parents, "free" is my favorite word when it comes to college cost. All right, let's hop back into our presentation. This is for when you review and it's exactly how to get to the document that I just showed you, but in case you're watching this on your own time and I went too fast - here is your step-by-step information. The next thing that we are going to talk about is the Bedford County Work Ethic Distinction. This is a program that started last year for our students. One of the great things is that award given only to graduating seniors. It is designed specifically to address our community and local industry concerns around the students soft skills beyond high school. This helps your student be more employable. So, some of you will be entering straight into the workforce, Some of you may work while you're going to school. If you choose to stay here in Bedford County, having this work ethic distinction award is going to give you that extra nudge that will, hopefully, put your resume and application on the top. It definitely - if you earn the 20 points from the rubric I'm about to show you. It needs to be on your resume. It needs to be on your college applications, and you need to make sure that you list it on any awards that you were given in high school. Before I leave this page, there will be three turn in dates for this. It is flexible: February the 17th, March the 10th, and April 21st will be the last date that you can turn it in. You are welcome to turn it in before that. If you need help filling it out, come by my office. I can print one out for you. I actually have some left from last year, so I'm happy to share that with you - some blank ones, that is. You can just complete it here in my office. What... it looks like again - you're going to go back over to TEAMS which students, you should be used to doing this for your classes, hopefully. You are going to go to the 2021 Channel ...files...and work ethic distinction. I put the information sheet from central office up here just in case you forget what it is - why do I want to do this. You can look right here at this document for the information. This spreadsheet is the most important part for students. This is where you will circle the point value that you have earned. So for instance, if you have no absences during senior year you will earn five points. I know that this is the time of Covid. I know that we've been quarantined and shut down. If you have questions about whether or not you qualify for "no absences" come by the office. I'm happy to talk to you about it. Okay? That goes for this whole document - if you have any questions about anything please come by my office. You do not have to earn points in every single category. You just need a grand total right over here of 20 points. Students, you will need to sign it before you leave my office. Sign it in ink. Remember to use your signature - that's cursive writing and/or all your letters connected - whatever you need to do to get that done. I will sign, it keep it on file, and we will send your information over to central office so that you can get that award. Last year that was a planned banquet but unfortunately due to Covid, that banquet was canceled. So hopefully, this year things will run smoothly and we will be able to celebrate this distinction with you. Again, if you forget where it is 2021 channel... files... work ethic distinction. The most important part of today's presentation is your scholarship information. As many of you remember, we were released from school in March of last year due to the pandemic and scholarships became very difficult - to handle, to process - and to award - because we had no honors day. We had no actual school going on. So, this year instead of doing paper/pencil applications for the scholarships, I am making everything available to you at your fingertips. This does not mean that I do not have hard copies. I do, they're in my office and, if you need one please come by and see me, okay? You can complete these application forms online and email your completed forms to me - or you can print them and complete them by hand. Guys, I know some of you don't have printers at home. You run out of ink and ink is expensive. I completely understand. If you need for me, or a fellow educator in this building, to print an application for you - we will make that happen. You just need to let us know, okay? To find all of your scholarship information - it is in Microsoft TEAMS, the 2021 channel... files...and scholarships. So, let's hop over to teams and take a look at that. 2021 channel... files at the top... scholarships... - Oops! (My folder moved. We don't want resumes and personal statements right now.) We want scholarships. And inside that scholarship folder, you are looking for scholarship offers. I have pinned to the top probably the most important document in this file folder. It is your scholarship choices. This is going to be your running list of scholarship offers, due dates, what's required for the scholarships (if I know ahead of time), and the amount. Students, this may be something that you want to print off and check back often. This is no means all of the scholarships we will be offering this year. This is just a start and what I know right now, as of this recording. Okay? - You will notice it has four columns on it. The first one is this scholarship name. I tried to match the scholarship name on this document to what it is called in the file. I'll show you that in just a second for the ease of transparency. The amount, if I know what it is - some of them have different amounts and so - if I know, I put it in. If I don't, it will say "various" or "unknown". The requirements that I know, as of right now, for that scholarship and, the due date to Mrs. Couch. Guys, most of these scholarships require additional information from me: whether it is a signed statement, a copy of your transcript, or a signature somewhere on the application. I am one person and there's about a hundred and fifty of you. So, I need a few days to process through those. So, the due date to Mrs. Couch is your most important date on this document. Okay, as of right now I have them set in due date order. I am hoping to continue that practice. But, just be aware. I am only human and there might be a mistake. Okay? Scholarship due dates will also be announced the week leading up to... You will hear an announcement during morning and 12:30 announcements: "Seniors, the scholarship is due to Mrs. Couch by this date". Let's take a look at the... first scholarship up here is the Bedford County Food Service Scholarship. So, we're going to open it so you can see what it looks like. It tells you right here the scholarship requirements. The first one is that... a person who was awarded this scholarship must have a parent or guardian working in a Bedford County Child Nutrition Program - essentially cafeteria... or nutrition department. Okay... if this is where one of your parents works, please complete this and I will get it turned in for you. Okay... you will see the scholarship document for you to fill out here. Okay... and any additional requirements. Please note that some scholarships have additional requirements listed at the bottom: a copy of your transcript through first semester of your senior year, and for this one - its for remarks explaining why you feel you deserve this scholarship, and it requires your signature. Okay...All of your scholarship that I have access to right now are loaded...through... on your TEAMS channel. if you have additional questions, please feel free to contact me or stop by my office. Um...last little bit of information... When you are accepted into your university or college or trade school or whatever it is that you are going to do after high school, please stop by and let me know. I want to celebrate with you first of all, and secondly when you receive your scholarship offer, I want to... - we keep a running tally of the amount of scholarships that are offered to our student body. This last slide is for parents and students - if you need to get ahold of me the best way is through email for parents. There is my email address.  Feel free to copy and e-mail me. There is the school phone number on the second line down. And students - the fastest way to get a response for me is to message me in TEAMS.
